Macs: Word 2008 for the Mac has no visual basic support. Mac users with that version of Word have been left "out in the cold" except they have access to Applescript. Applescript is very powerful, but no compilation of "debate stuff" for the Mac user exists other than "dual boot or use Parallels." While this is great advice to people with the resources & inclination, it ignores the work that has already been done to integrate the mac into modern debate.
Brad Bolman, Peter Vale, and Pembroke Hill have spent a while on making the Mac work with paperless debate. We've created a near-complete adaptation of the Macros to Applescript. The first effort is included in Hardy's Paperless Debate V2 and the rest will be included shortly. (Downloadable here http://www.whitman.edu/rhetoric/tech/ApplescriptPaperlessMacros1.0.zip, or from the main Whitman Tech page http://www.whitman.edu/rhetoric/61tech.htm ) For more information, email bbolman@gmail.com or pcvale2@gmail.com

Welcome to The Paperless Debate Wiki!
This is a place to share knowledge about paperless debate. If you encounter problems & solutions, please feel free to add!
    Starters:

If you are interested in paperless debate, the first place to look is Aaron Hardy's paperless debate site, home of the Verbatim template:
    paperlessdebate.com
There's a brand new version of Verbatim with lots of new features. The site also includes a copy of the most recent Paperless Debate Manual , by Hardy.
It's now almost totally outdated,Debate Synergy:
DebateSynergy.com enables debate students to store online research
and some of the techniques shouldn't be used for modern paperless templates -- but for basic information about MS Word, templates &stream debate read Naveen Ramachandrappa's guide: http://debate.uga.edu/research_guide/howto.pdf
    Additional Word templates:
These templates expand, extend and alter some of the functionality in Verbatim. They don't necessarily include all of Verbatim's functionality.

Debate Synergy template forSidebar Word 2007: http://georgetowndebateseminar.wikispaces.com/synergy
Debate Synergy takes advantage of the new Office 2007 interface to offer more than just macros. Fans of Word 2003 can still choose to use the original Word 2003 interface in Word 2007. It integrates easily with existing templates, is very customizable, has a single easy-to-use toolbar, a few intuitive shortcut keys,
AddIn enables file organization and does not require lengthy adjustments or learning.
    Cal's template:

    (Send to
speech based on block titles, cite requests require a single macro)

The Dartmouth Debate Institute's template: http://ddi09.wikispaces.com/file/view/Dartmouth+Template+2009.dot {Dartmouth Template 2009.dot} (Send to speech based on block titles, cite requests require a single macro, eliminates debugging error with the moveup code)

Sam King's template page: http://stanford.edu/~samking/debate/paperless.html (Tons of great new features, many integrated into Verbatim starting with v. 2.0)
Swayze Smartt (Former St. Marks & Wake debater) has worked on a Word 2007 template for St. Marks HS that does the "ribbon stuff" that replaces Word 2003's toolbars. It looks great. Swayze says "not everything is working yet," but you should still take a look: {SM Debate.dotm} Swayze also reports that

    Word Problems & Solutions
Docmap: You open Word, but your document map is a total mess! Cites, Tags & cards are mucking up your careful organization: Word Broke My Document Map
Template wont load: Ack!!! I opened a document, but the paperless macros didn't load. I can't give a speech now! Adam Symonds has a solution: Corrected Template Location
Make your paperless macros work no matter what document you open or what template its based on: Copy your macros to your normal template. Or, rename your template (in word's default template directory) normal.dot. Be sure to back up your existing normal.dot. The normal template loads every time word starts no matter what template the document is based on. This is either fail safe or fail deadly depending on your point of view. Adam Symonds' solution works better than
    Other approaches:
The only solution for paperless debate that implements version control, transmits evidence in real time during a speech, and does not require Microsoft Word is under development at https://zatasoft.com/machete . The beta version can be downloaded at https://zatasoft.com/machete/download . You can email questions or comments about this software to support@zatasoft.com.
Jon Bruschke is working with a relational database instead of documents to do electronic files. Moving beyond the "individual document" model is a huge improvement in terms of efficiency & usability. More about it here:http://commweb.fullerton.edu/jbruschke/ecards/ecardsdemo.aspx

Examples of "Version Control" include: SVC (Software Version Control,) Subversion, Git (Used for linux kernel development http://git-scm.com/ ), & Microsoft Sharepoint, including Hardy's custom Sharepoint product PaDS .
A combination of unobtrusive version control, a relational database, plus an editor/viewer that can replicate Word's functionality is fun to think about. There are vast advantages to creating a system to allow datamining of debate research. Such a system would provide deeper insight into the community and allow the game to continue to evolve (see the work of Jure Leskovec in the field of social informatics about for more information http://cs.stanford.edu/people/jure/ ).
